Border Counties rally, this event headed up by Paul Hughes as clerk of the course was a great success, no major problems were encountered and it went down well with the competing crews, it was won by David Weston junior in his 2010 Subaru Impreza. the Weardale navigation rally started from Barnard Castle on February 13th. and covered 90 miles in Teesdale and Weardale and was won by Andy Lane and Ian Tullie in a rather large Mercedes 300 automatic saloon from around 1966, I had Chris Dodds in with me in my 1400 Ford Puma and due to Doddsy’s brilliant navigation we managed to win the 12 car section of the rally, at the time I did not have my MSA licence and the entry was only £15 and not £35 that the crews in the main event paid so it was certainly the cheapest option. We had only one wrong slot and the wee Puma went well on the mainly dry roads, although the Sportway endurance control tyres do not like the water. Malcolm Holdsworth and Andrew Fish in the Honda Civic were short of some of their route instructions and a rare bout of sickness for Andrew dropped them to 10th. in the main event.

At the recent club annual general meeting Tosh Townsend was voted on as a member of the management committee, while Andy Aird stood down, as far as I can find out no other changes of personnel were made.

MAC’s Mumbles
I see the price of fuel is still rising, up to 115.9 at the Shell garage near me for both diesel and petrol, was it ever cheap ? After a shaky start the Grand Prix season seems to be improving, what I saw of the Aussie one it looked quite lively, could have been the rain that livened things up. There a lot of rallies on at the moment, I have been out marshalling on quite a few, Teesside is coming up as is the Pirelli and then the Jim Clark, my personal favourite of the year, good weather, lovely scenery, great rallying, couple of nights under canvas, good craic, be there if you can, the Berwick Classic is always a good one, then there is Hamsterley, something for everybody, June July and August might seem a little quiet in comparison.

Mac Cliff.
