Cultra Hillclimb 2014

June 2014 saw Tosh once again heading off to Northern Ireland to compete in the Thoroughbred Sports Car Club's Cultra Hillclimb held annually at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, set in fabulous grounds on the outskirts of Belfast.

The weather forecast for the weekend was good, and as this was the first time in many years that Mr Sylva had been taxed insured and tested its fair to say that Tosh was very much looking forward to driving him on the public roads again.

Cultra Hillclimb had once again been heavily oversubscribed, not surprisingly as it is not only the world's oldest active hillclimb but also one of the highlights of Northern Irelands motoring calendar.

Every year there is a theme to the event, and this year it was Minis, Mods and Monsters - and it was lovely to see so many young ladies getting into the swing of the sixties with their miniskirts and lovely long legs!

The day was beautiful, the sun was shining and Tosh absolutely loved driving Mr Sylva on the public roads once again after so many years spent languishing in his garage!

With the Sylva sporting a very fresh ceramic clutch there was no chance of the gremlins of 2013 making an appearance and this year he was sharing the car with his very long time friend Smyth, who, although having been involved with Tosh and Mr Sylva for over 20 years, had never actually driven the Sylva in competition.

Both Tosh and Smyth had a brilliant day, Tosh getting even more familiar with the car he hadnt driven for many years and Smyth finding his feet with a car he had helped prepare for many years but never sat behind the wheel.

Initial runs were carefully taken but as the day wore on the spirit of competition obviously surfaced and times tumbled accordingly.

Whereas in 2013 Tosh had been very happy to settle for a steady and safe run with no dramas this year brought a totally different set of criteria: enjoy yourself, have a go, and if possible beat the man you share the car with!

The whole day was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, Tosh keeping very clear of all kerbs whilst giving a pretty good account of himself by finishing well within the top half of entries. Smyth had his wavy head on and so spent most of the day driving up the hill waving to the appreciative crowds (as he is wont to do).

Ultimate feat of the day was the fact that when all the event photographs appeared on the web, there appeared to be far more of Smyth than Tosh.
As Smyth has said many timesin the past: "Cruel, but fair!"

Quite honoured to be the lead image on the TSCCNI YouTube video (not sure about the music, though)
