Andrew Roughead - mixing Work and Play

Mixing rallying and my day job as a mechanic can be very complicated at times.
I've been very fortunate to have employers that are very kind to allowing me to take time off at such short notice to be able to compete in different events.

I started co-driving at the age of 14 on road rallies which helped me gain valuable experience of reading a map and keeping track of the timing side of things. I won the historic road rally championship at the age of 15 and my 16th birthday couldn't come soon enough to allow me to compete on stage events.

From the age of 16 I started out co-driving on stage rallies. My first ever event was with fellow Whickham member Terry Clark in his Toyota Celica where we finished a very notable 3rd overall, not bad for my first event and it was to be Terry's best result. From then I've competed on over 200 rallies all over the world from England to New Zealand with some of the best drivers around.

I spent a few years in the MSA UK Rally Academy scheme which only a selected few co-drivers were part of. Gaining advice from former WRC champions such as Robert Reid who guided Richard Burns to the 2001 world championship and Nicky Grist who partnered the extremely talented Colin McRae was the most influential few years I've had in the sport.
